Canon RF 16mm f/2.8 Review: Is This Ultra-Wide Lens Useful for Weddings?
As a wedding photographer, I’m always looking for lenses that help me tell a couple’s story in unique ways. Most of the time, my go-to lenses are the Canon RF 24–70mm and the Sigma 85mm — they cover almost everything I need for portraits, details, and candid moments. But sometimes, a wedding calls for a different perspective.
That’s where the Canon RF 16mm f/2.8 comes in. It’s a small, lightweight, and affordable ultra-wide lens designed for the RF mount. At first glance, it might seem like an odd choice for weddings, but during a recent intimate backyard celebration with 50 guests, it proved surprisingly useful.
Here’s why:
- Capturing the whole scene – The 16mm allowed me to show the entire backyard setup in one frame, giving the couple photos that reflect the atmosphere of their day.
- Group photos in tight spaces – When everyone gathers in a small space, the extra width helps fit everyone in without having to back up too far.

Of course, the 16mm isn’t perfect for everything. Faces can distort if you get too close, and it’s not a lens I’d use for portraits. But as a storytelling tool, it definitely has a place in my wedding bag.
